Encom - Our Student Management System

What is Encom?

Encom is a web application designed for Heritage Christian Online School that manages all the student data, lets teachers manage the various learning outcomes (PLOs), keeps track of the Student Learning Plan (SLP), and, at the end of the year, works with the teacher to combine all that information into the report card.

How is Encom Useful to Me?

Because Encom is a web application, you also have access to this information, which allows you to:

  • Choose which courses your student will be taking
    • View, and place orders, for the different resources each course requires
  • View your student's SLP (Student Learning Plan)
  • Follow the teacher as your student fulfills the various learning outcomes
  • View current, and past year's report cards

If you're a returning family, you'll notice some huge differences between the original Encom, and the new one. Other than it looking a thousand times better, it's been completely re-written, provides new features, and can easily be expanded with new features in the future.

Returning families should also know than we've moved all of last year's student data (including Learning Plans, Learning Outcomes, and Report Cards) into the new Encom, however the SLP and Learning Outcomes won't be accessible until a bit later in the month.

Where is it?

You can log into Encom at http://encom.onlineschool.ca, or by clicking on the 'Log into Encom' link in the upper-right corner of any HCOS page.

   Returning Families
Your username and passwords are the same as they were in the original Encom as of early June.

   New Families
You would have received your username and password in the e-mail when your first child was accepted.

Typically, your username is the primary guardian's (as submitted from the enrollment application form) first name and last name put together without a space.
Example: My name is Steve Therrien, so my username would be SteveTherrien (the case of the username doesn't matter)

Passwords are case sensitive.
Example: If my password was Ekw7cta2, entering in EKW7CTA2 would not work.

If you've forgotten your password, you can reset it at http://encom.onlineschool.ca/forgotten_password.php by entering in your username, and your e-mail address. Once you've done this, an e-mail will be sent to you containing a link that lets you enter in a new password. If you don't receive an e-mail, be sure you've entered in your username and e-mail address correctly (it won't tell you if you've entered it incorrectly), and check your e-mail address' junk mail folder. (Note: Hotmail is notorious for blocking wanted e-mail).

Important: If you have trouble logging into Encom, and can't reset your password, please contact us using the same e-mail address as your Encom username. This is to prevent someone other than yourself from getting into your account. If you no longer to that e-mail account, please contact the office.

Please take some time to log in, explore around, and if you haven't done so, select your student's courses and resources.

Thanks, Steve Therrien Technology Supervisor STherrien@onlineschool.ca

We've put together a short video tutorial showing you how to log into Encom, and select the various courses and resources for your students.

Moodle - Our Leaning Management System for the Online Courses

For the 2005/2006 school year, we have made huge upgrades and improvements to our learning management system. These improvements will allow better communication between teachers and students. For those of you that were with us last year, we have replaced the need for Bitwise. The functionality of instant messaging and voice chat is integrated in our learning management system. Students will be able to click a button to send virtual phone calls to other people with the integration of the popular voice chat program Skype.

This improved communications system also means better teacher-to-student feedback. Through the use of the new 'Hand-in Box', Students will now have the option of submitting homework assignments by simply submitting it within the course, rather than attaching the file to an email. This allows teachers to give direct feedback to a student's work.

A school-wide calendar system has also been added. This powerful system allows students to set reminders for themselves, and teachers to give guidelines to their classes. Site-wide announcements through this system can further enhance the sense of community in an online environment.

Among many other additions is the clean and sleek new visual style, and our continuing course enhancement. Many courses have already received dramatic improvements, and the rest will be undergoing some of those changes during the school year. We have set goals for each of our courses to make them more interesting and interactive. This includes refining their content, improving format and style for clarity, and adding interactive animations and streaming movies. We're excited for the new year, and we hope you enjoy the many improvements we've added.
