Quality Educational Choices with Christian Values |
Greg Bitgood |
Throughout the year our administrative team will be writing about the various aspects of our school’s mission statement. We will define, encourage, and explain all the many nuances of Education at Heritage. God has blessed us this year with more families and children than we have ever had here at HCS. The campus school has 315 students and our Online School continues to explode with over 730 students. In just two years we have grown 4 times our former enrollment. Why, because of pressure in the public system, because of our continual effort to keep tuition at a reasonable amount? Yes, partially. But I believe it is primarily because we know who we are, we know what we are supposed to do and we have focused our attention on what we really value.
Values are the things we treasure; obviously treasures are the things we value. . . .

| Weekly Emails |

September is here and if you are enrolled in a DL program such as with our school it is time to think of those weekly emails. The common questions I hear are “How important are they?” and “What do I say in them”
It is extremely important that there are weekly emails. It is one of the things that the Ministry of Education, when doing their Inspections, checks to see if our teachers are sending and receiving weekly emails from their parents and or students. Our funding and thus the things we are able to offer as a DL school could be in jeopardy if we get lax in communicating back and forth weekly between teachers and their parents and students. One of the things that impressed the Inspection team last year was when different teachers could show their journal entries from different parents showing how often communication has been taking place. . . . | Making Time to Shop and Other Home School Priorities |

I absolutely love the start of a new school year. I have fond memories of shopping for school supplies with my mom and loved the anticipation of a new year. I haven't found the new school year to be any less thrilling with homeschooling. And, even though we school year round we still make September special. This year my kindergartener got a new backpack and I bought all of the children their own pencil cases. The pencil cases are part of my brilliant idea to spend less time searching for pencils, erasers, and pencil sharpeners and more time actually working - I'll let you know if it worked in June. Besides the shopping, we also enjoyed a day at the beach with a big group of our homeschooling friends for the Not Going Back to School Picnic. Now that all of the preparation is done it's time to actually start the school year...

Questions from an “Old” Teacher Entering a “New” Aspect of Education |
Pat Mackesy |
After teaching seventeen years in a Christian School, I find myself called to a whole new arena of Education. As I come to the world of Home Schooling, as I begin to work with parents who have taken on the awesome task of educating their children, as I reflect on my own practice of Christ-centered teaching, I find myself asking: If we are presenting Christ-centered education, what does God’s Word reveal is His truth for all areas of curriculum? If we believe Colossians 1: 15 – 17: ( He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together) how then should we teach? What then, should we be asking ourselves this September? ....

The Featured Web Sites for this month are based on a well known book by Roald Dahl and the more recent movie directed by Tim Burton - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The book covers a variety of genres including adventure and comedy. The story is about a young boy Charlie Bucket who comes from a poor family, and spends most of his time dreaming about the chocolate that he loves but usually can't afford. Things change when Willy Wonka, head of the very popular Wonka Chocolate empire, announces a contest in which five gold tickets have been hidden in chocolate bars and sent throughout the country. The kids who find the tickets will be taken on a tour of Wonka's chocolate factory and get a special glimpse of the wonders within. Charlie miraculously finds a ticket, along with four other children much naughtier than him. The tour of the factory will hold more than a few surprises for this bunch... (IMDb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367594/ ).
