Why Teach and Require a Bible Course Greg Bitgood

Heritage Christian Schools, both the Online and Campus school, hold the policy that all students have to complete a course of study in Bible throughout all grades. (Note our campus school in the middle grades incorporates this study into a Humanities course, but the Bible is still very much the object of study in this approach.) Further to this, students must pass Christian Studies 11 and 12 or an equivalent Bible course in order to receive a Heritage Christian School diploma. Students can still earn the BC Dogwood Diploma and be considered a graduate of the BC school system, of which we are part, but they will not receive the additional honour of a Heritage Diploma without the Bible requirement. (Here is our BAA Grade 10 to 12 course requirements: PDF document). ....

Spelling For Extra Credit! Chris McGrath

Students, parents or teachers don't usually meet the subject of spelling with cheers or applause, unless one is given to the love of the trivial.  To be honest, I have never enjoyed it either, as a student or as a teacher. That might explain some academic performance angst in earlier years.  Nevertheless, as in all things in life, spelling is a part of our task of education and is necessary for the report cards and Language Arts requirements.  But is that all that this seemingly often-humdrum assignment offers?  If so, then like many students we can legitimately say, "do we have to?"  If our answer is nothing more than, "it is necessary in order to read better" or " you want a good mark on your report card, don't you" or " a good speller makes a good reader which gets you into university and/or good jobs" then we are selling short both the subject and our students.

It dawned on me, in the middle of giving a spelling test no less, that there must be much more to spelling than what is mentioned above. ...

Portfolio Time Again! Sarah Bennett

It's time to start thinking about portfolios again. I always think there is such a long time between the start of school in September and the first portfolio in November, but it ends up feeling like a very short time. October is quickly passing and anything we do now to prepare for portfolios will help to make it easier to get them in to our teachers in November.

There are many, many ways to prepare for portfolios. ...

To Google or not to Google - that is the Question

Pippa Davies

Hello HCOS Bibliophiles,

As Internet research grows at an ever increasing volume, students often wonder about the validity, or reliability of their sources. I  thought this article might be helpful to parents and teachers on the benefit of using subject starters and other search engines for successful and reliable results.  This article is written by Rita Vine, the web Adviser to Sitelines, who teaches "Beyond Google" at Toronto Public Library.

Guest Column: Must I be Superwoman to Home School? Subscribe to Zan Tyler's biweekly Newsletter

By Zan Tyler - Editor of the Crosswalk HomeSchool Channel

When you consider the possibility of home schooling for the first time, it's a little like deciding that your event in track and field will be the high hurdles. The first time you look at that track, all you see are the hurdles, one after another. You don't think about the stamina you build by training for the event. You don't think about the satisfaction you will gain by actually learning to clear the hurdles. And you don't anticipate the joy of winning the race. You just think about the hurdles. But God never calls us to do anything based on the merits of our own strength. ....
