Olympic Learning Camp

by Pippa Davies

We were in for a wonderful surprise, with the start of our learning camp at the new Vanoc Building in Vancouver.  Thirty- two students and parents were ushered into a very secure and plush executive style boardroom, where we were offered leather chairs, all with our own microphones, around a "huge" boardroom table.  Students were immediately empowered with the mike in their hands’ and there was no shortage of keen questioners.  An enraptured audience of students and parents alike were treated to many interesting speakers.

Firstly, a graphic artist explained the whole artistic element behind the Olympics, from the celebration of First Nations peoples, to the nature and beauty of our province.   The Olympic "Logo Cop" talked to the kids about the importance of the protection of the Olympic icons, and how the whole event is funded.

A highlight for many of the kids was the lady who talked about torch bearing.   You could almost feel the excitement in the room, as she inspired the kids to celebrate what the torch meant, and how it promoted solidarity and patriotism. Surrey here it comes!

Sharing from the heart, a Christian, Olympic rower, Joy talked about her faith, and how God had been an intricate part of her Olympic career.

Bruce Deacon, former Olympian and now education officer, shared how his faith had real practical implications in his walk with the Olympics, and how leadership, love, community and excellence were all principles found in the Bible.

Fun was in store for the little kids, when they experienced some of the Para- Olympic equipment, from cross country sledding races to ice hockey races.  Lots of giggles were part of the action!

I am sure all of our students, went home inspired by the upcoming events, and wanting perhaps to share more in the excitement of our next  learning camp.  Our prayer is that the excitement for how God is part of our Olympic dreams, will impact our future researchers and Olympic dreamers.
