Book Club Buzz – Red Badge of Courage
by Pippa Davies
This January we read The Red Badge of Courage, by StephenCrane, and our group was not overly excited about reading a Civilwar novel, written in such formal language. However, I am thankful that they challenged themselves to read this book, and think more about why
countries/soldiers go to war, and it’s cruelrealities.
Our discussion was thought provoking, as we sought to decipher whether Godis for or against war. Book clubbers actively researched their bible anthologies, to find biblical references to support their arguments.
Here are some of the biblical references that they found to support their arguments.Although we could not come to a one answer fits all, we enjoyed challenging ourselves to dig further into our bibles and chat about literature and history from a Christian worldview.
Romans 3- 5
3Not only so, but we] also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
Romans 12:18-19
If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."
Exodus 17
The LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.
The emphasis of Jesus as a peace maker, was found in Matthew 5.
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. (NIV, Matthew 5:38-45)
Although we could not come to a one answer fits all, we enjoyed challenging ourselves to dig further into our bibles and chat about literature and history from a Christian worldview.
If you would like to be part of our book club discussion we meet next on Wednesday evening; 10 March at 7.45- 9 pm. To further our chat on war, we are looking at the plight of young girls in Afghanistan by reading; The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis.
Happy reading!
