What I Learned at Yukon Dan

by Esrael Haile - grade 4

Yukon Dan was great!  I learned about gold and gold panning and where you can find gold (even here on Vancouver Island).  I learned that iron pyrite, another name for Fools Gold, is magnetic but real gold isn't.  I learned that I should never put my hands in the paydirt because the oil on my hands will make the gold float away.  I learned that gold is nineteen times heavier than water!  I learned about the transportation, tools, and food that people in a Gold Rush would use.

Yukon Dan handed around samples that he found when he was prospecting. I got to hold a gold nugget and a diamond and a big opal (that's my birthstone so I really liked that) and lots more samples... even a piece of a meteor!  If you get a chance, you should go to one of Yukon Dan's presentations.  What did I like best about Yukon Dan's presentation?

EVERYTHING!
